Earth Day: Adopt a Plant
I love to grow things. Perhaps my agricultural ancestors have passed on the gardening gene. For years when spring arrived, I would tend my plants and then head to the nursery for more flowers, trees, and shrubs. This time of year you can find me outdoors weeding, fertilizing, dead-heading blossoms, and celebrating the new life everywhere.
But I have always stopped at the bargain tables where plants that have been damaged are reduced to half-price. I like to think of this as my plant adoption program. When I return home, I remove broken branches and give special care to my new family members before finding a good place for them to grow. This flower-fostering gives me great joy!
Recently this program has grown to a new level. I discovered behind a local “big box” store that scores of damaged plants and shrubs were discarded and filled a dumpster. I stopped and learned that most of the damage was minor and with a little tender care, my new friends would flourish. I filled the back of my car with terrific throw-aways and headed home filled with joy for my savings, good deed, and enhancement of my yard.
I have shared this good news with my adult kids and grandchildren and encourage you to join me this Earth Day in rescuing and adopting and enjoying God’s good creation.
